Turnovers were the name of the game last Friday at Wildcat Memorial Stadium as the Wildcats hosted the Lake Stevens Vikings.
Both team had more than their fair share of turnovers, but the Vikings were able to capitalize on theirs and defeated Oak Harbor 41-28.
After an early interception by Isaiah Trower, the first quarter was a bit of a yawner until Lake Stevens got on the board with a 46-yard pass touchdown with 3:15 left in the quarter.
The second quarter started with each team punting once, then later Lake had a first-and-goal at the Oak Harbor 7, but fumbled the ball into the end zone where it was recovered by Trower. Three plays later the Wildcats punted, but the Vikings' first play was a pass intercepted by lineman Quinton Wallace who returned the ball 12 yard to the Lake Stevens 32. Six plays later Fred Webster punched it in from a yard out to tie the game at 7 with 4:44 remaining in the 2nd quarter.
Lake Stevens responded to the OH score with a 10-play, 62-yard drive to put them back up 14-7 with 2:00 left and that score would stand at halftime.
In the second half, Lake Stevens fumbled away their first possession on the first play, and 8 plays later it was Webster again, this time from 7 yards out to tie the game at 14 with 2:27 in the 3rd.
The Vikings fired right back, needing just 3 plays to regain the lead, scoring on an 81-yard pass play. The third quarter ended with the Wildcats attempting a fake punt that came up not quite a yard short and the Vikings on top 21-14.
To start the 4th quarter, Lake Stevens marched 61 yards in 5 plays to boost their lead to 28-14, but the Wildcat fought back on their next possession. The first play was a 34-yard pass play to Julian Faralan that took the ball into Viking territory, the last play a 33-yard pass to Andre Cumberbatch, who collided with the defender but was able to hang on to the ball and fall into the end zone to close the score to 28-21.
Lake regained their 2-score lead 2 minutes later, scoring on an 8-yard run. Oak Harbor then fumbled on the first play after the kickoff, and the Vikings put the game out of reach by scoring on a 1-yard run with 4:07 remaining to take a 41-21 lead.
The Wildcats didn't give up, ending their next drive with an acrobatic catch by Jojo Webster with 2:25 left to make it 41-28, but the Viking were able to run out the clock and win the game.
This Friday the Wildcats are at home again, hosting the 0-3 Everett Seagulls to open league play.
