Youth football 2012-08-25

What a full day of football!  Oak Harbor's Ft. Nugent Park hosted 5 football games last Saturday, the opening week of youth football.

Stanwood was the visitor in all 5 games and though they played hard, went home on the short end of the score in 4 of the games.

The midget Cougars started the day.  The game started out shaky when the Cougs fumbled the ball away in the first series, but the defense held, then the special teams returned the Stanwood punt 41 yards for a score just over 2 minutes into the game.  Three and a half minutes later the Cougars scored on offense, on a 27-yard run to make the score 14-0.  In the second quarter, the Cougars increased their lead with 50-yard and 4-yard TD runs.  The halftime score was 26-0 in favor of Oak Harbor.  The Cougs continued to dominate in the 2nd half, scoring 3 more times.  Stanwood did get on the board late in the third, breaking away for a 45-yard score.  In the end, though, it was the Cougars winning 39-7.

Next up were the junior Jaguars vs Stanwood Black.  Their first play from scrimmage went 58 yards to the end zone and the team never looked back, building a 26-0 lead in the first quarter.  The Jags' coach let up a lot on offense after the big first quarter, scoring only once more, a 16-yard run in the middle of the 3rd, but the defense continued to play tough, earning a 32-0 shutout of the visiting team.

The middle game of the day was played between the junior Pumas and Stanwood Red.  Oak Harbor got on the board first, scoring from 10 yards out with 49 seconds left in the first quarter.  The Pumas scored again on a 4th-and-goal play in the 2nd quarter, to lead 12-6 at the half.  Starting the second half with a big bang, the Pumas ran the first play from scrimmage 42 yards for the score, then got another 6 points with 3 seconds left in the 3rd to take a 26-6 lead, which would also be the final score.

On to the two peewee games.  First was the Bobcats vs Stanwood Red.  In this game, Oak Harbor was outplayed from every angle and fell 36-0 to the visitors.

In the final game of a long day of football, the peewee Lynx took on Stanwood Black in what was overall the best game of football that day.

Stanwood scored first with 30 seconds left in the first quarter, but the Lynx ran the ensuing kickoff 62 yards and converted the PAT to take a 7-6 lead with 11 seconds left in the first quarter.  Stanwood looked like they were going to score again in the 2nd quarter, but the Lynx stopped the 4th down play from 3 yards out cold, and on their first play ran the ball out to midfield.  The Half ended with no further scoring and the Spartans ahead 7-6.

The Lynx scored once in the 3rd quarter to take a 14-6 lead and again early in the 4th to make it 21-6, but Stanwood was not going away quietly.  The Spartans scored from 41 yards out to close the score to 21-13 with 7 minutes left in the game, but the Lynx responded with a score of their own at the 4:16 mark to boost their lead to 28-13.  Stanwood was able to get a last-second TD to make the score respectable, but it was the Lynx leaving with the 28-19 victory.

While it was a good day at home, in away games, the senior Wildcat team traveled to Orcas Island and won 44-12 but the midget Panthers lost 16-12 at South Whidbey.

The next set of game is next weekend, September 8th.
