Girls tennis 4-14 vs Cascade and 4-16 vs Snohomish

The varsity girls tennis team split the week, losing at Cascade then winning at home against a strong Snohomish team.

At Cascade on Wednesday, junior Cady O'Dell lost a tough match, 1-6, 6-4, 1-6 but seniors Erin Neilon and Laurin Rico won their matches as did junior Clarissa Abadesco. In doubles action the 2nd doubles team of Shannon Neilon and Alexa Holmly fought hard in their first set before falling 5-7 and lost their 2nd set. 1st and 3rd doubles also lost, but coach Horace Mells said that "the doubles have improved their play".

Things were different on Friday as 1st singles O'Dell demolished her opponent 6-0, 6-1. Neilon, Rico and Abadesco also had little problems dispatching their opponents guaranteeing the team win.

Although none of the doubles teams were able to get a win on Friday, Coach Mells said the they are still improving.

The JV girls didn't have a good week, winning only one scoring match day and 3 over the two events.

At home against Cascade on Wednesday after over two weeks off, the JV girls played well in their first set, winning 4 of 6. Cascade then woke up and won most of the rest of the sets to secure a 6-1 win in scoring matches.

At 1st singles, Kelli Travenetti played hard in her 7-5, 6-3 win (the "match of the day", according to Coach Brown) as did Kristen Shiels at 2nd singles. She won the first 7-5, lost the second 5-7, the lost a heartbreaking tiebreaker 9-11.

At 4th singles, Kim Smith lost 2-6 in the first then dominated 6-0 in the second before falling in the tiebreaker.

The 2nd doubles team of Rachelle Muzones and Chelsey McKenzie got pounded in their first set 0-6, but came back to win the second 6-3 to force a tiebreaker. The tiebreaker was long and close, but in the end Cascade was able to win 13-11 to capture the match.

The other OH winner was the doubles team of Molly Murdock and Tatum Edwards in extra match play. They won easily, 8-3.

On Friday the JV Wildcats traveled to Snohomish where the Panthers dominated every aspect of the game. Coach Brown singled out Cassia Gianova at 1st singles for her effort. Although Cassie went down 1-6, 3-6, Coach Brown said that her opponent was an exceptional player and Cassie put forth a "tremendous effort" in her match.

Oak Harbor's lone win came in 3rd doubles when Rachelle Muzones and Chelsey McKenzie fought their way through 3 tiebreakers 7-6(2), 6-7(5), 11-9 to capture the match.

This coming week the Varsity team is at home Monday against Monroe while JV is at home Wednesday against Lake Stevens and Friday against Arlington.
