BBB 2011-01-12 vs Glacier Peak and 2011-01-14 vs Lynnwood

After being postponed a day due to the threat of snow, Glacier Peak came to OHHS to finish the first half of the 2010-2011 regular season and the first two games weren't pretty.

In the dome, the freshman squad fell 48-26 while in the main gym the JV team got pummeled 75-37.

Cortez scored 7 for the freshman team, Mattila and Groenig 6 each, Rennes 4 and Atienza 3. For the JV it was Gibbs, newly moved up from the Freshman team 10, Houck 7, Herron 6, LaBelle 4, Bell 3, Faulkner Johannsen and Hermann 2 each and Knoll 1.

The varsity game, however, was close for the entire game. The first quarter ended with OH down 16-13, they went toe-to-toe in the 2nd, until GP hit a 3-point buzzer beater to take a 5-point halftime lead, 30-25. The OH offense stalled in the 3rd, scoring only 8 points and GP was now on top 45-33. Oak Harbor came back yet again, closing to within 4 points, but the Grizzlies pulled away to win 55-44.

Mike Washington scored 19 points for the Wildcats, Denzel Massey and Jay Stout added 8 each. Stevie Bratt put in 6 points and Drew Washington 3.

On Friday against Lynnwood, the Freshman and JV teams took out their frustrations from Wednesday on the visiting Royals. The Frosh team led all the way, and held Lynnwood to just 2 points in the 3rd period on their way to a 48-34 win. Isaiah Rennes scored 23 points to lead the team. Cortez scored 9, Groenig 7, Krantz 6 and Mattila 3.

The JV team won even bigger, with 11 different players scoring at least a free throw. Leading 11-4 at the first horn and 21-13 at the half, the boys picked up and outscored Lynnwood 22-12 in the third on their way to a 53-35 win. Cameron Faulkner had an outstanding game, scoring 21 points and Corey Houck was also in double figures with 10. Zach Gibbs scored 6, Dayne Herron and Anfernee Angkaw 4 each, Chris Hailer and Forrest Brown 2 each. Jackson Knoll, Kiefer Hermann, Michael LaBelle and Andre Cumberbatch each scored a free throw.

As exciting as the first two games were, they were nothing compared to the varsity game! The 'Cats were down by 3, 15-12 at the end of the first period, but recovered to tie the game at 23 by halftime. The game started to get out of hand, as the Wildcats didn't score a field goal until late in the 3rd, and scored only 6 points total in the period, giving Lynnwood a 32-28 lead. Oak Harbor made up the difference, tying the game, and with just 3.9 seconds on the clock, were going to get the ball. Mike Washington was bumped while attempting a layin and missed, but Stevie Bratt was right there, grabbed the rebound and put it in the basket right at the buzzer. The officials conferred and the shot was ruled no good, it left his hand after the buzzer sounded. Even after reviewing the video, it was hard to tell, as the gym was so loud it was hard to hear the buzzer.

So, to overtime we go. In the extra period, the Wildcats opened up their offense, scoring 13 points in just 4 minutes while holding Lynnwood to just 7. Final score: Oak Harbor 56, Lynnwood 50.
