BBB 2012-01-06 vs Marysville - Getchell

The Oak Harbor boys basketball teams recorded their first 3-game sweep of an opponent by beating Marysville-Getchell in varsity, JV and Freshman action Friday night at OHHS.

In Freshman action, the two teams played fairly evenly in the first half, which ended with Oak Harbor ahead 25-19, but the Wildcats opened up the game in the second half, outscoring the Chargers 28-17 on the way to a 53-36 victory. Zach Jones led the team with 18 points and Chris Humphries was also in double figures with 11 points. James Clay scored 8, Tre Bobo and Jonathon Bright 3 each, and Brad Nehring, Hunter Adams, Gage Eccleston, Jacob Sturdevant and Ben Fikse 2 points each.

The JV team sprinted to a 13-6 first quarter lead and increased it to 35-20 to begin the 4th period. While the JV boys scored 19 points, they allowed M-G to score 22, but held on for a 54-42 win. Free throws proved the difference, as the Wildcats sank 19 of 28 attempts from the line. Three players finished in double figures - Gabriel Groenig with 17, Anfernee Angkaw and Rhys Mattila getting 10 each. Diamonte Ridley finished with 9 points and Matt Zafra 8.

Oak Harbor and Getchell played tight ball in the varsity matchup. The first quarter ended 15-12 in favor of Oak Harbor and the Wildcats led 29-27 at halftime. Starting the 4th quarter, though, the Chargers held a 45-44 lead. No matter, as the Wildcat offense took off in the final period, pouring in 29 points to win 73-60. Mike Washington scored 24 points, including going 6-for-7 from the free throw line in the final quarter. Chris Hailer had a big game, scoring 12 points, many on acrobatic plays. Jojo Webster scored 11. Elias Whitefoot scored 8, Matt Burgoyne and Dayne Herron 6 each, Kevawn Brooks 4 and Paul Johannsen 2.

At the close of the first half of league play, the varsity team has a firm hold on 5th place with a 4-4 record. The JV and Freshman teams are both 2-6 and in 8th place.

The boys play at home Tuesday, Jan 10th against Shorecrest in their only game of the week.
