Youth basketball 2012-01-07

The S.W.I.S.H. league in Mt. Vernon started their winter season with seeding games at various locations in and around Mt. Vernon. This year, Oak Harbor is fielding a 5th grade team, two 6th grade teams, a 7th grade team and two 8th grade teams.

Three of the games were covered Saturday afternoon/evening.

The 7th grade team was first, playing the Celtics from Granite Falls at Skagit Valley College. The 'Cats played close for 3 quarters, but GFalls used the 4th quarter to put the game away 34-25.

In the final game of the day, the 8th grade Gold team played Meridian and things looked good early, as the Wildcats jumped to a 10-1 lead and led 13-6 at the first horn. Meridian's defense held Oak Harbor to just 2 points in the second half, which ended in a 15-15 tie, and late in the game some key free throws proved the difference as Meridian won 37-34.
