It was a absolutely beautiful day Thursday at OHHS for the last regular-season meet of the year. The good weather was a factor as many OHHS athletes continued to excel.
Junior Shantae Young, who jumped just under 16-5 last Saturday at South Whidbey did a lot better Thursday, leaping an incredible 17 feet 7 inches. Shantae also won the triple jump and 100m dash and was a member of the winning 4x100m relay. Shantae's performances in the two jumping events places her in the top 10 in state for 4A schools.
Stephen Lewis set PRs in both the 100 and 200 meter dash, cutting a quarter-second from his best 200 time. Freshman Josiah Miller set new PRs to finish 5th overall in the two races.
John Duhrkopf is closing in on the 2:00 mark in the 800, needing to shave just under two seconds to make it. Junior Michael Reith, back after a long absence, PR'ed with a 2:11.89, and his brother, Freshman Matt, dropped 4 seconds off his mile time.
Senior Brooks Waller cut another 2/10th of a second off his 110m hurdle time, finishing third. Brooks has cut over a second off his time from the first meet of the year. Teammate Kevin Richards had new PRs in both the 110 and 300m hurdles.
Senior Sean Welch added over 5 feet to his personal best, throwing the javelin for 140-10 and 3rd place. Senior Cody Church threw 93-0, Tobi Wilhelm 88-2 and James Middleton 97-7, all new personal bests.
In addition to Shantae Young's winning triple jump performance, senior Hope Thompson set a new personal best by jumping 32-3, good enough for 2nd place.
Junior Mariah Koontz, new to the track team, long jumped 11-9.5, her best for the year, and sophomore Janelle Yoshimoto leaped 15-3 for a new personal best.
Sophomore Jessica Foster and senior Erin Buch both set new personal records in the javelin, with Jessica throwing 48-10 and Erin 59-11.
Freshman Dominique Jackson "DJ" to her friends, set new records in both the shot put (30-7) and discus (93-0). DJ has really improved in the discus this year, from her opening week throw of 59-6 to her current 93-0. She's won the event outright twice this year.
Sophomore Allison Duvenez won the 300m hurdles (again). She's run the race 4 times this year, and has been the winner each time. She also set a PR with a time of 46.86. She finished 2nd in the 100m hurdles, but had a PR of 17.15.
Freshman Taylor VonGrey had a great 3200m race, finishing 4th with a PR time of 13:28. That's nearly 20 seconds better than her previous best.
Ariel McCarter had a PR in the 1600m, running in 6:20 and freshman Emily Bain also had a PR with a time of 6:12
Senior Carolyn Vasquez set a PR in the 400, lowering her time to 1:09 and freshman Maura McKole was 2nd overall with a PR time of 1:03.13
Overall, both the boys and girls teams finished the meet in 2nd place. The Lake Stevens boys dominated with 102 points to Oak Harbor's 42 and Arlington's 37. The girls side was much closer, with Arlington scoring 69.5 points, just 1.5 ahead of OH. Lake Stevens was a distant 3rd with 50.5.
