Wrestling 2015-02-01 - State Tournament at the Tacoma Dome

Jackson Constant is satisfied with his 2nd place finish at the 2015 state wrestling tournament in the 285 lb bracket.

Six Oak Harbor wrestlers made the trip to Tacoma for the 2-day Mat Classic state wrestling tournament, four wound up on the podium at the end of the tournament.

As a team, the Wildcats finished in 8th place with 66 points.  In first was Enumclaw with 110 and 2nd North Central with 108.5.

Arlington was 6th, MP 10th and Stanwood 11th - a good showing by Wesco 3A North schools!

Individually, Jackson Constant, at 285 pounds was the highest finishing individual.

Ranked #6 heading into the tournament, Jackson recorded two falls on Friday, pinning Ballard's Deehring in 1:08, then the #2 heavyweight Jacob Apodaca from Auburn just before the end of the 2nd period.

On Saturday beat #8 Nick Little from Kamiakin 7-4 to advance to the final.

There, he met up with Mosese Fifita from Glacier Peak, the #1 ranked wrestler in the state and ranked nationally.  In the championship match, Jackson was pinned in 1:12, finishing 2nd in state.

At 145 lbs, Mark Johnston finished in 3rd place.  He started the tournament by pinning Chris White of Ballard in 2:27, then pinned #2 ranked Bryan Wais of North Central in 3:59.

On Saturday, his first match was against #4 Avery Meyer from Bonney Lake, and Mark took a 13-6 loss, moving him to the consolation bracket.

Mark got quickly back to his winning ways, beating Shadle Park's Bryden Uyehara (#3) 9-6 to advance to the 3rd place match.

There he met up with Bryan Wais once again, and again got a win, 3-1 to capture 3rd place.

Jeremy Vester also finished 3rd at 138 lbs.  Going into the tournament ranked #3, he got a 7-3 win over #8 Connor Thun from Columbia River, then lost to #1 ranked Tino Nieves 9-2 and moved to the consolation bracket.

On Saturday, Vester started with a 10-0 win over #12 ranked Peter Mattson from Prairie, then beat Bainbridge Island's #4 ranked Jack Miller 5-3 in OT.

Jeremy's next match was against #5 Rich Bondurant of Mt. Spokane.  He won, 7-1, to set up the 3rd place match against #7 Erik Harris-Udall from Shorewood, where he won once more, this time 11-5 to finish in 3rd place.

For Christian Bertram, at 120 lbs, it was a tough year, physically.  He injured his arm early in the season, had to continually cut to keep his weight under 120 lbs, then, the weekend before state, got sick and missed a couple days of practice.

Even so, he dug deep and found whatever it is that keeps wrestlers going, and finished 6th in state.

He started the tournament ranked 7th and won his first match on Friday by pinning Kelso's Christian Freund, then lost by pin to 5th ranked Yayha Mirzaei of Auburn Mountainview.  In his final match on Friday, Christian beat #10 Joel Delgadillo from Everett 10-4 to stay alive in the tournament.

Saturday morning, Bertram scored his 3rd win of the tournament, beating Auburn's #3 ranked Drew Aplin 7-1, but lost to Enumclaw's Quinton Southcott (#1 ranked and eventual 3rd place finisher) by a razor-thin 6-4 margin.

The loss moved Christian to the 5th/6th place match, where he got pinned by Kennewick's Alejandro Ramos.

Oak Harbor's other two entrants, Amber Cramsey-Behnke and Tyler Adamson both lost twice on Friday.  Tyler lost by 3-1 and 4-2(OT) scores while wrestling sick, and Amber lost her first match by pin (to the eventual champion), won by pin in 43 seconds, then lost by fall.
