Boys and Girls summer league basketball

Wednesday was the final day for both the boys and girls JV squads for the summer league in Mt. Vernon.

The boys JV squad faced off against Burlington and Stanwood HS at Mt. Vernon HS. I only watched part of the first game, but one thing that stuck out with me was a lack of depth on the bench. There were a LOT of players missing that I would have expected to see there. Coach Ronning and the players that were there did their best, but a lack of experience showed on the court and our guys gave away a 7 point lead at half and wound up losing to the B-E team. I don't have a result of the second game.

The Girls JV gold also played two games at Mt. Vernon, the first also against Burlington and the second against Lakewood. Again, I only watched half of the first game, and I see these girls improving with each game. Although they lost, they are getting shots off and their defense is still solid. Again, the more time they spend on the court the better they'll get. Team camp should add a lot of confidence to team, which will be the Freshman team next school year.

Finally, the JV Purple, which for the most part is made up of next year's JV squad, and a few floaters. Both games were at Sedro-Woolley HS, and both were against La Conner teams (white and blue). The LaConner blue looked like a varsity squad from what I saw.

I didn't see the first game as I was in Mt. Vernon, but the 'Cats won that one, and after an hour break played the second game. It was close for the first half and most of the second, but Tiffany Earnhart went down with a twisted ankle (nothing serious, but it kept her out of the rest of the game), and her physical play was missed. LaConner took advantage of it and wound up pulling ahead in the end.

There was some great plays on the court, including a textbook-perfect block by Ariel Brothers and a long-bomb 3-pointer late in the game by Sheena Corey.
