Volleyball tournament at Coupeville 21 Jun

The varsity and JV volleyball teams (known in this tournament at OH1 and OH2) traveled all the way to Coupeville for a 1-day round-robin tournament against teams from Coupeville, South Whidbey and Sultan. OH and Coupeville both had 2 teams, while S. Whidbey and Sultan had only their varsity squads.

The first match was OH1 vs Coupeville 1, and this one was all OH from the opening serve. Our girls were in a groove and with some great setting by Melany Cone, cruised to a 25-4, 25-9 win.

Next up was OH2 against Sultan. This match was close, and the girls showed a lot of grit by staying with Sultan, but they wound up falling 22-25 adn 21-25. In either the first or second game (I don't recall which), Sydney Carlson almost single-handedly caught up with 5 aces in a row (it seemed like). I wasn't taking detailed notes as I was also taking photos.

The third and fourth games were played at the same time. OH1 was in one gym against Sultan while OH2 was in another vs South Whidbey. OH1 again put on a clinic on how to play volleyball winning the first game 25-5. Sultan regrouped and mounted a challenge in the 2nd game, scoring 17 against the Wildcats, but it wasn't enough, as our girls got to 25 first.

On the OH2 side, during the first game they were coached by Coupeville's Rick Swankie, former OH JV coach, as Coach Molitor was with OH1. The girls game out flat and just couldn't seem to put anything remotely resembling a rally in the first game, falling 4-25. They showed a lot more hustle in the 2nd, and again Carlson was great from the service line, but finished on the short end of a 25-17 score.

At noon OH1 played South Whidbey, which game our girls their biggest challenge of the day, and actually took a game from us. SW came out to play in the first game, holding on to win 25-20. OH1 came back in the second behind some great hits by Jessica Muzzall and Marisa Sutherland to win 25-17. Game 3 was exciting, with one long rally that was finally ended by an absolutely textbook solo block by Kim Mowbray. The 'Cats won that one 15-8 to win the match 2-1.

OH2 was in action next against Coupeville 2, and they picked up their first match win of the day, in 3 game, 25-20, 19-24 adn 15-8. OH2 was clearly the superior team and should have won in just two games, but two things were working against them in this match: serving and serve returns. I don't thing a and server got more than a single serve per service rotation, which Coupeville often had multiple aces from many of their serves. They were able to correct this and take game 3, but it was pretty close.

In the next round, both teams again were in action. OH1 vs Coupeville 2 and OH2 vs Coupeville 1. The OH1 game wasn't even a contest, and the girls played without a coach. Even without playing their best (no hard hits - concentrate on placing the ball in a specific spot on the floor) they still won the first game 25-5. All 5 Coupeville points came from service errors on our part. Coupeville loosened up a bit in the 2nd and played some decent volleyball, scoring 14 points to the Wildcats' 25.

In the other gym, OH2 just couldn't get things going, losing both to Coupeville 17-25 and 13-25.

The final match of the day was OH1 vs OH2. Coach Molitor had thought about mixing up the teams a bit to even them out, or having OH1 ease up a bit, but in the end told each team to play their best. In the end, OH1 won both games by identical scores - 25-14.

It was long day of volleyball, and Coach Molitor got to see a lot of the players, both JV and varsity.

Photos have been posted to 2 separate albums, one for each team. While I'm pretty sure I got all the right people with the right teams, there may be one or two that are not in the right place, especially if they switched teams during the day, or if I took a photo of them with player from the other team. One set of photos from the OH2 team is not labeled with the player's name, as I don't know her last name. If someone can help me out, I can label the photos correctly.

Finally, if I got any of the scores wrong, let me know so I can correct it.
