BBB 2013-01-08 vs Shorewood

It was a rough night for Oak Harbor boys basketball as the Shorewood Thunderbirds came to town and swept the Wildcats on their home court, although the varsity game went to overtime and right down to the final second.

The freshmen team got off to an OK start, scoring 7 points in the first quarter, but scored only 4 in the second and were down 30-11 at halftime.  While the offense came to life in the second half, it wasn't enough and the boys fell 59-36.  Shane Huttula and Preston Rankin each scored 9, with all of Rankin's points coming off 3-pointers in the final period.  Tyler Snavely finished with 6, Tanner Walker 4, Alex Harrison 3,  DeAndre Mitchell and Sean Erskine 2 each and Savion Passmore 1.

Shorewood jumped to a 17-8 first-period lead in the JV game and led 30-16 at the half, but the JV boys stayed in the game and closed the gap in the 3rd, but the T-birds pulled away late to win 54-38.  Gage Eccleston led the team with 12 points and Cortez Ridley added 10 more.  Jake Sturdevant put up 6 points, Connor Parmenter and JJ Johnson 4 each and Ben Fikse 2.

The first quarter of the varsity game ended with Shorewood up by just 1 point, 11-10,  but put on a 22-12 run in the second to lead 33-22 at the half.  The Wildcats slowly chipped away at the Shorewood lead and when Drew Washington drained a long 3-bomb at the buzzer of the 3rd quarter, the 'Cats were down by just 2 points, 45-43.  The two teams went back and forth in the final quarter and when the buzzer sounded at the end of the 4th, the game was tied at 61.  In the extra frame, neither team could create separation on the scoreboard.  With 16 second left the score was tied again at 67, and that score stood down to the 9 second mark.  Jojo Webster went to the line to shoot two.  He made the first, giving OH a 68-67 lead, but the second rattled off the rim.  Shorewood got the rebound and was able to get down court and as the buzzer sounded the ball went through the basket, giving Shorewood a 69-68 OT victory.

Dayne Herron and Chris Hailer were both major factor in the 2nd half comeback.  Both men finished with 18 points, Herron scoring 12 in the second half and Hailer 15.  Drew Washington finished in double figures with 14, Gabe Groenig added 8, Jojo Webster 7 and Dyllan Harris 3.

The 7-6 boys are back home again this Friday, hosting the 3-10 Meadowdale Mavericks.
