GBB 2013-01-09 at Shorewood

Wednesday afternoon the girls went to Shorewood for a series of three back-to-back games against the Thunderbirds, starting with the C team at 3:45pm.  Of the 8 players on the T-bird freshman roster, only 1 had played organized basketball before, and it showed.  The Wildcat girls shut out the host team for the entire second half, and when the dust settled, the final score was Oak Harbor 69, Shorewood 5.  Every player on the OH roster scored points, led by Taylor Deconzo with 19, Janae Payne with 16 and Rosie Mooki with 10.  Matti Miesle finished with 8, Suzanne Kaltenbach 6, Hannah Knoll 4 and Ria Bains 2.  Exchange student Mizuki Suga played on the C team Wednesday and scored her first basket of the year, getting a loud cheer from the JV and varsity players who were watching.

The JV team didn't do as well.  Starting out by digging a 12-3 first-quarter hole, the OH girls trailed 20-9 at the half.  Sparked by some tough defense that held Shorewood to just 4 points in the 3rd, they closed the gap to just 24-18 at the end of the third.  Continuing to play tough, our girls kept cutting away at the Shorewood lead, getting it down to just 2 points, 27-29, with 2:32 left in the game.  That's as close as it would get as the Thunderbirds were able to run the clock down to win the game 34-27.  Melanie Callaway was hot for the night, scoring 11 points to lead the team.  Hayley Lundstrom scored 5, Irene Gribble 4, Deja Bunch 3 and Brooke Peplinski and Annabelle Whitefoot 2 each.

In the varsity nightcap, the Wildcats went up against a 10-3 team that featured a powerful post player who made her presence known quickly. Shorewood sprinted to a 19-8 first quarter lead and never looked back, winning 58-35.  Annie Leete topped the Wildcats with 13 points, Ciera Wiser scored 6, Natalie Fiallos and Kelsey Rankin 4 each, Jinai Guzman 3, Deja Bunch and Annabelle Whitefoot 2 each and Jalani Bobo 1.

The girls are on the road again Friday at Meadowdale, then return home next week Wednesday to face Glacier Peak.
