GBB 2013-01-16 vs Glacier Peak and 01-18 vs Stanwood

Last Wednesday the hot Glacier Peak Grizzlies from WESCO 3A South came to town and left a triple winner.

It was not pretty for the Wildcats in the Freshman game.  GP jumped to an 11-2 first period lead and Oak Harbor never seriously threatened, falling 41-21.  Taylor Deconzo led the team with 7 points, Janae Payne, Kiesha Watts and Tricia Sablan each scored 4 points and Matti Miesle had 2.

While GP led the JV game, it was closer, with the 'Cats down 19-12 at the first break and 31-21 at halftime.  In the 3rd, the Grizzlies unleashed their offense, scoring 24 points while OH could muster only 8.  GP went on to win 64-38.  On a positive note, the Wildcat scoring was spread over 10 players, with Jinai Guzman leading with 9 points.  Irene Gribble scored 6, Kenna Prosch 5, Deja Bunch and Brook Peplinski 4 each, Kyla Bernardo 3, Hayley Lundstrom, AnnaBelle Whitefoot and Jamie Estrella 2 each and Melanie Callaway 1.

The varsity game was tight for 3 quarters.  GP led 13-8 at the first break and 27-25 at halftime, but the Wildcat defense held the visitors to just 5 points in the 3rd quarter and Oak Harbor led 33-32 going into the final period, but the lead didn't last long, as Glacier Peak outscored the Wildcats 21-6 in the final 8 minutes to win 53-39.  Jalani Bobo and Kelsey Rankin each scored 10 for the team, Annie Leete 9 , Ciera Wiser 8 and Deja Bunch 2.

Friday evening the teams were back in action, this time against league-leading and #5 ranked Stanwood.  It should be noted that ONLY the varsity team was ranked.  Coming into the game the Stanwood Freshman team boasted only a single win on the season, and they did not get their second Friday night.

Reversing the 1st period of the GP game, it was the Wildcat freshmen jumping to a big early lead, 13-2, and continued to pour it on in a 60-20 win.  Taylor Deconzo and Rosie Mooki were the only players in double figures - Taylor with 18 and Rosie with 16.  Kiesha Watts finished with 9, Janae Payne 6, Tricia Sablan 3, and Suzanne Kaltenbach, Mattie Miesle and Hannah Knoll 2 each.

While the JV game against Stanwood was tied 6-6 at the first buzzer, Oak Harbor went on an 11-3 second period run and continued the tough defense in the 3rd to build a 23-12 lead at the end of the 3rd.  Playing tough defense so far, the 4th period saw the OH offense come to life, scoring 17 points in the final quarter to win 40-20.  Hayley Lundstrom led the team with 10, Irene Gribble 6, Jinai Guzman and Jamie Estrella 5 each, Brook Peplinski and Melanie Callaway 3 each, and Jessica Hollins, Kyla Bernardo and AnnaBelle Whitefoot 2 each.

As expected, Stanwood won the varsity game, but not without a lot of work.  OH trailed just 10-7 after 8 minutes and 26-20 at the half.  The 3rd period was not good to Oak Harbor as Stanwood opened with an 8-0 run and ended the game with a 17-2 run, winning 58-32.  Annie Leete was hot from outside, scoring over half of the team points with 17.  Ciera Wiser added 8, Kelsey Rankin 4, Deja Bunch 2 and Jalani Bobo1.
