FB 2015-10-26 JV vs Pilchuck

The Oak Harbor JV football team ended their season on a high note, beating Marysville-Pilchuck 46-19 to cap an undefeated run through their WESCO 3A North schedule.

Oak Harbor got on the board first when Ryan Valencia burst through for a 17-yard TD run.

Just under 4 minutes later, Jordan Bell connected with Taeson Hardin for a 78-yard play to make it 14-0.

Pilchuck scored twice late in the 1st quarter to close the game to 14-13, but with 1:46 left in the quarter, Josiah Welch ran around the left side for a 66 yard score, then the 'Cats ran a perfectly executed double reverse for a 2-point PAT and a 22-13 lead at the first horn.

The scoring continued in the 2nd quarter, with the Wildcats scoring on a 43-yard run by TJ Passmore and 40-yard run by Kyle Nickols.  Pilchuck also scored from 9 yards out to make the halftime score 34-19 for Oak Harbor.

In the second half, the 'Cats stepped up the defensive pressure, holding the visitors scoreless,  while scoring twice - another run by Passmore (27 yards) and a 58 yard run by Spencer Champion.

Final score: Oak Harbor 46, Marysville-Pilchuck 19.

The JV squad has one more game, On Nov 2nd at home against Meadowdale.

VB update 2015-10-27

Since the last update, the Wildcat volleyball team has been on a tear.

Traveling to Getchell on Oct 20th, the girls swept the Chargers 25-17, 25-20, 25-14, then hosted Everett, beating them 28-26, 21-25, 25-21, 25-14.

FB 2015-10-21 Freshmen vs Stanwood

Wednesday the Oak Harbor freshman football team played their second game of the season against Stanwood, this time at home.

On the Spartans' home field on Sep 23rd, the 'Cats squeaked out a 16-14 win, but on Wednesday the team just could not get the offense going and fall 12-2, the lone score coming when Michael Fisken, coming in from his linebacker spot on a blitz, tackled the Stanwood QB in the end zone.

They travel to Pilchuck on Wednesday the 28th to end the regular season against the Tomahawks, then travel to Edmonds Stadium on Nov 4th to take on Meadowdale.

Girls Swim 2015-10-19 vs Mt. Vernon

Saying goodbye to the three seniors on the Oak Harbor girls swim team - Sophie Dickinson, Marissa Morris and Mariel Empinado, the Wildcats hosted the Mt. Vernon Bulldogs at Vanderzicht Memorial Pool in Oak Harbor.

While Mt. Vernon won in the team scoring in a squeaker, 93-87, the Wildcats did well in the meet.

In the final event of the day, the 4x100 free relay featured the three seniors and Baelee Whitinger, and the quartet splashed to a 1st place finish in 4:43.49.

Morris also won the 200 free.

Taliah Black won two individual events, the 200 IM and 100 breast, and Natalie Hahn and Kelly Gruenwald added points by finishing 1-2 in the diving competition.

Three days later the 'Cats swam against another 4A school - Kamiak - falling 101-84 in team scoring.

That ended the regular season.  There's a last chance qualifer at Pilchuck on 10/29, then the District meet at the Snohomish Aquatic Center on Nov 6th and 7th.

FB 2015-10-24 Varsity at Pilchuck

by David Svien

The run game is strong in these ones.

Using the same battering ram attack that had carried them all season, the Oak Harbor High School football squad thrashed host Marysville-Pilchuck 42-13 Friday night.

The lopsided win, a rarity in what has been a tight, intense series the past few years, allowed the Wildcats to clinch second place in the Wesco North.

Now 5-2 overall, 4-1 in league play, Oak Harbor will hit the road next Friday, Oct. 30, to play Meadowdale (5-3), which tied for #2 in the Wesco South, in a crossover game.

For the first time in four seasons, the Wildcat/Tomahawk match-up did not decide the Wesco North championship (Arlington clinched that with a 43-13 win against Everett) but the game was still huge.

It was also all 'Cats, all the time, as Oak Harbor thoroughly dominated, crashing through Marysville's defense for 381 yards on 56 carries.

Princeton Lollar led the way with three touchdowns, while Dyllan Harris added a pair of scores.

Up 21-13 at the half, the bigger, badder 'Cats wore down Marysville in the second half, tacking on three touchdowns to blow things open.

Lollar opened things with a one-yard scoring run in the first.

After the Tomahawks tied things up on a 24-yard TD pass from Erik Lind to Trent Tinglestad, Harris blew in from two yards out.

Savion Passmore staked Oak Harbor to a lead it would never relinquish in the second quarter. His 66-yard bolt to pay dirt put the Wildcats up 21-7.

After the halftime break, Lollar added a pair of touchdowns runs (two and four yards), before Harris capped the night on a nine-yard sprint to the end zone.

FB 2015-10-06 Varsity vs Stanwood - Homecoming

by David Svien

Afterward, they danced the Hokey Pokey.

During their game Friday night, the Oak Harbor High School football squad just danced all over visiting Stanwood.

Crashing for an eye-popping 469 yards on just 32 carries, the Wildcats mashed their way to an epic 49-6 Homecoming win and kept alive their hopes of getting a high playoff seed.

Now 4-2 overall, 3-1 in Wesco North play, Oak Harbor travels to Marysville-Pilchuck (4-3, 3-1) Friday, Oct. 23 to close out league play.

The visit will come one day before the year anniversary of the shooting deaths at that school which cancelled last year's match-up between the 'Cats and Tomahawks.

Oak Harbor has an outside shot at finishing in a first-place tie for the league title, but can not earn the #1 seed either way.

If the 'Cats beat Marysville, and Arlington (4-0 in league) stumbles against Everett (1-3), Oak Harbor would share the championship.

Arlington is guaranteed the #1 seed come playoff time, however.

A win and it owns sole rights to the title. In the event of a loss, they hold a tiebreaker against both Marysville and the Wildcats, having beaten both teams.

Knowing that all of that will play itself out, the 'Cats concentrated simply on one thing against Stanwood -- pounding the ball down the throats of the Spartans.

That they did, with six of their seven touchdowns covering 37 or more yards.

Princeton Lollar keyed the offense, crashing through the line for 160 yards on 16 carries, with touchdown runs of 41 and 37 yards.

He also added a 37-yard pass reception (in which most of that was his running) for a third score.

Oak Harbor spread out the rest of the night's touchdowns, with Savion Passmore (82-yard run), Mac Carr (56-yard run), Dyllan Harris (11-yard run) and Mac Nuanez (75-yard run) tallying one score apiece.

With the runners going wild, 'Cat quarterback Tyler Snavely only threw five passes, but he completed four of them for 86 yards.

Oak Harbor's defense stood strong, as well, with Harris, Diangelo McKinnet and Andrew Miller each picking off Stanwood passes.

FB 2015-10-14 - Freshman vs Getchell

While it was a tight game, the Wildcat freshman football team did what they needed to do and outscored the visiting Chargers 15-6.

Oak Harbor got on the board first when Corey Boler picked off a Charger pass and returned it 35 yards.  The kick was good for a 7-0 Wildcat lead halfway through the 1st quarter.

The defense struck again with just 3 seconds left in the 1st quarter when Michael Fisken blitzed from his linebacker spot to tackle the M-G QB in the end zone for a safety.  Now it's 9-0 Oak Harbor.

The scoreboard was quiet through the 2nd and most of then 3rd quarter as both teams slugged it out, neither able to do much on offense.

With Just 20 seconds left in the 3rd it was another pick-six for the defense.  This time it was Ashton Prats going 15 yards for the score.  The kick failed, making it 15-0 for Oak Harbor.

Getchell was able to get on the board on a 1-yard push with just 3:17 left in the game.  MG tried an on-side kick, but Caleb Fitzgerald fell on the ball to ensure a Wildcat possession.

Final score: Oak Harbor 15, Getchell 6.

On October 10th the photographer was able to get to all of the U-8 teams, except the one team that had a bye (we'll get them later - never fear).

Volleyball 2015-10-13 vs Pilchuck

by David Svien

Marysville-Pilchuck had a long ride back home.

Absorbing three losses in three matches Tuesday, the Tomahawk spikers felt the full wrath of host Oak Harbor, and it stung. Badly.

The Wildcat varsity romped to a 25-22, 25-13, 13-25, 25-22 win, improving to 4-4 in Wesco North action, 4-6 overall.

While the main crew was winning, the young guns also came away with victories.

The 'Cat JV ran away with a 25-19, 25-19, 26-24 win, sparked by the play of Andrea Ruben (21 assists, 9 aces, 10 digs), Cami Bristow (9 assists, 6 kills) and Chloe Stowell (10 kills).

Also winning in straight sets, though the action went on a big longer, was Oak Harbor's C Team, which triumphed 31-29, 25-22, 23-25.

"After waking up, we eliminated mistakes and played disciplined defense," said 'Cat coach Cory Whitmore.

He praised Megan Flood and Cierra Dean for their play, while singling out Taylyn Boop, who "was great at the net."

Girls Soccer 2015-10-13 vs Mountlake Terrace

by David Svien

Gillian Crossley knows her way around the net.

The Oak Harbor High School soccer sensation, also a goal-scoring weapon for the GU18 Whidbey Islanders club team, banged home her team's lone goal against Mountlake Terrace.

Crossley's score, which came from just outside the box, wasn't enough, however, as the Wildcats were nipped 2-1.

The deciding goal came off of a corner kick late in the second half.

The 'Cat JV fared a bit better, eking out a 2-2 draw.

Camryn Ray tallied Oak Harbor's first goal, taking advantage of a mistake by the Terrace keeper, who lost control of the ball in front of the net.

Jessica Vester capped the scoring, drawing the keeper out too far, then slipping the ball past her at the last second.

Boys Tennis 2015-10-08 vs Stanwood

by David Svien

Close matches are their trademark.

The Oak Harbor High School boys' tennis squad has played 11 matches this season, and seven of them have come down to one point.

Of course, when you play it so close to the line, the margin of error is remarkably small, as the 'Cats found out again when they were nipped 4-3 at home Thursday, Oct. 8 by Stanwood.

The loss, the second straight by that margin, dropped Oak Harbor to 5-6 overall, 4-5 in Wesco North play.

The Wildcats close out the regular season with two matches next week, traveling to Marysville Oct. 12, then returning home to host first-place Everett on Senior Night Oct. 13.

Complete Stanwood results:

Cross Country 2015-10-08 at City Beach

by David Svien

Well, at least they got to run at home.

Hosting their only home meet of the season Thursday, Oct. 8, the Oak Harbor High School cross country runners spent much of the afternoon chasing after fleet-footed visitors.

With Glacier Peak, Arlington and Edmonds-Woodway on hand, the competition was intense, and, while the Wildcats didn't come away with any wins, they did acquit themselves well.

Glacier Peak's Heidi Smith won the girls' race, covering 5,000 meters in 18 minutes, 52 seconds, while Nathan Beamer of Arlington (16:02) won the boys' battle.

Alexis Smith (17th), Jake Hucko (14th) and Benjamin Gasper (10th in the JV race) were the top Wildcat finishers.

FB 2015-10-09 Varsity vs Getchell

by David Svien

It was a complete role reversal.

A week after blowing a big lead and falling under a non-stop hail of points at Arlington, the Oak Harbor High School football rebounded with a vengeance Friday night.

This time it was the Wildcats going on the scoring tear, as they threw down 34 straight points to close the game, eventually routing visiting Marysville Getchell 46-9.

The win lifted Oak Harbor to 3-2 overall, 2-1 in Wesco North action.

The 'Cats accomplished most of their destruction on the ground, with three backs racking up 100+ yards as Oak Harbor ran wild against a weak Charger defense.

Princeton Lollar was the main man, rumbling for a season-high 260 yards, while Mac Carr and Savion Passmore each topped the century mark in support.

Oak Harbor's defense made its own stand, holding Marysville to just 104 yards of total offense.

The game was close, however, at least in the early going, as the Wildcats clung to a 12-9 lead midway through the second quarter.

Touchdowns from Carr (a three-yard run) and Passmore (an 82-yard jaunt to the end zone) staked Oak Harbor to the lead, but Maryville used a 35-yard field goal from Declan Sweatt and a 28-yard scoring run by Jeremy Pinca to hang tough.

Any hopes of the game playing out down to the wire quickly faded, though, as the 'Cats stepped up and rammed home five straight touchdowns to end the game.

Passmore (21-yard run) and Carr (5-yard run) each added their second score of the evening, before Lollar caught them with two touchdowns of his own.

The first came on a 50-yard explosion, the second on a 13-yard sprint to pay dirt.

Mack Nuanez rounded out the run-happy attack with a two-yard scoring run to provide the night's final points.

Oak Harbor returns to action next Friday, Oct. 16, when it hosts Stanwood for Homecoming. Kickoff is 7 PM.

Girls Soccer update 2015-10-09

Last week was busy for the soccer girls as they played 3 games over 9 days, including a rare Friday night game against Anacortes.

On Sept 30th the girls went to Marysville to take on Pilchuck with both JV (3-0) and Varsity (2-0) falling to the Tomahawks.

Friday the 2nd of October saw the girls in Anacortes, where the JV team got a very nice 6-0 victory and varsity a 3-1 win.

After nearly a week off, they returned to play on Thursday the 8th.  The JV squad fell to visiting Meadowdale 1-0.  The varsity squad got a quick goal and led for much of the first half before the Mavericks tied the game at 1.  The score remained tied until the final minute, when Meadowdale was able to scoot a ball past the OH keeper on a corner kick to leave with the 2-1 win.

Photos from the varsity game are posted HERE.

There's three more home games left in the regular season, on Oct 13th vs Mountlake Terrace, Oct 22 vs Shorewood and Oct 28th vs Everett.

They also have 3 games on the road - 10/15 at Shorecrest, 10/20 at Glacier Peak and 10/26 at Lynnwood.

.

Youth football 2015-10-03

It was a great Saturday on October 3rd as all seven OHFCL teams came away with wins.

On the road, Midget Gold beat Granite Falls 42-8, Midget Purple beat Anacortes Purple 12-0 and the Senior team beat Upriver 32-19.

At home PeeWee Purple won 45-0 over Burlington, PeeWee Gold 38-13 over MV Black.  Junior Purple beat Friday Harbor 39-0 and Junior Gold won 37-6 over MV Green.

The Junior Purple team was so dominant, that at the end of the first quarter, OH led 18-0, and had not run a single offensive play - all scoring was on returns - punts and fumbles.

Action photos were taken of the Purple Junior team and both PeeWees.

JV football 2015-10-05 vs Arlington

The JV squad played only their 2nd home game of the season (of 3), hosting the Arlington Eagles.

It was a hard-fought game, with the halftime and 3rd quarter scores even at 14 each.  Then, with just 43 seconds left in the game, Mac Carr ran it in from 31 yards out to make it 20-14.  Arlington had one last chance, but the Wildcat defense held for the win.

Photos from the game are posted HERE

The next two games are on the road for the JV guys, on 10/12 at Getchell and 10/19 at Stanwood, then host Pilchuck for the season finale on the 26th.

.

Freshman football

A couple of tough losses marked the Freshman football team's efforts recently.

Hosting the Everett Seagulls on October 1st for the boys' first home game of the season, it looked like the 'Cats might get the win, but a late score by Everett won it for the visitors 24-16.

On Wednesday the 7th, the team traveled to Arlington and fell 39-7.

Arlington photos are HERE.

The freshman team plays at home for the next two weeks, this coming Wednesday against Getchell, and the following Wednesday against Stanwood.  They end their season with a trip to Pilchuck.

VB update 2015-10-09

It's been a rough week and a half for Oak Harbor Volleyball.

Since beating Arlington 3-2 on September 21th, the Wildcat varsity squad has won only 2 matches and lost 3.

Going to Shorecrest on 9/23, the girls came away winless, falling to the host 25-20, 25-23, 25-18.  They came back 6 days later to sweep Meadowdale 25-13, 25-15, 25-22 in Lynnwood.

This time with 5 days of rest, the team traveled to Stanwood and while they played some inspired volleyball at times, the could not get games put away and lost 3-0.  In the first game, Oak Harbor had game point at 24-20, but Stanwood came back to win 26-24.  In the second game, it was all Stanwood as the Spartans won 25-12.  In the 3rd game, the Wildcats again held game point, but fell 27-25.

The week ended at home on the 8th, with Pink Out night in support of breast cancer, against Edmonds-Woodway.  The first game was close, with E-W getting a 25-22 win.  The 'Cats settled down, played good, solid volleyball and won game 2 handily, 25-16.  The 3rd game went to the Warriers 25-13.  In the 4th game, Edmonds grabbed an early lead and extended it to 7 points, but the 'Cats went on an 11-3 run to knot the game at 18 before EW pulled away again.  The 'Cats got close again, 23-24, but lost the 4th game 23-25 and the match 4-1.

FB 2015-10-02 at Arlington

by David Svien

All good things must come to an end.

The Oak Harbor High School football squad hadn't lost to anyone in conference play other than perennial power Marysville-Pilchuck since 2011 entering Friday's game at Arlington.

Now, that streak is done.

Surrendering 35 unanswered points on a rain-drenched night, the Wildcats blew a 21-3 lead and fell 38-21 on the road, dropping their record to 2-2 overall, 1-1 in Wesco North play.

Arlington and MP sit atop the standings at 2-0.

The Eagles blasted Oak Harbor with a potent passing attack, which surprisingly got more effective the more it rained, which is generally the opposite of how that works.

Arlington gunslinger Andrew Kalahar overcome a slow start, in which he completed three of 10 passes, to get red-hot. He finished on a 25-for-32 run from the second quarter on, running up nearly 400 yards of offense on his way to tossing for five touchdowns.

It was a radical turn for a game that started firmly in Oak Harbor's favor.

The 'Cats opened the scoring by driving 81 yards on their first possession, with Tyler Snavely hitting Dyllan Harris with a 12-yard bomb to cap things.

After another strong scoring drive of 68 yards, Oak Harbor seemed to bust the game open when Princeton Lollar blasted in on a short touchdown run to make it 21-3.

His score was set up by a 42-yard run from Savion Passmore, who brought the ball down to the three-yard line before Arlington tacklers rode him down.

But, just as hopes of ruining Arlington's Homecoming were catching fire, Kalahar emerged to save the day for the hosts.

He responded to Lollar's score with a 71-yard scoring strike of his own on the very next play, then kept on flingin'.

Oak Harbor's own offense suddenly sputtered out, turning over the ball on downs every time it had possession in the second half, and mustering little of a comeback.

Passmore provided a brief spark near the end, returning a fumble 51 yards to the Arlington five-yard line.

Unfortunately, the Wildcats promptly went four-and-out from there to cap their second half frustrations.

Lollar led the running game, racking up 136 yards on 22 carries, while Passmore added 65 yards and Harris gutted out 64.

The Wildcats return to action Friday, Oct. 9 when they host Marysville Getchell (0-2, 1-4).

FB 2015-10-01 Freshmen vs Everett

Last Thursday the Oak Harbor freshman football team hosted Everett in their first home game of the season.

The Wildcats got on the board first.  Dorian Hardin carried the ball from about 7 yards out but was stripped of the ball just short of the goal line.  The ball bounced into the end zone where Shingo Johnston was there to jump on it for the score.  Aaron Martinez ran in a 2-point conversion to make it 8-0 with 1:19 left in the 1st quarter.

Everett responded with a 6-yard run and a pass PAT with 7:42 to go in the half to tie the game.  They added another 1-yard TD that was set up by a 45-yard pass play (the PAT kick failed).  With 2:04 to go in the 2nd it was now OH 8, Everett 14.

The two teams slugged it out for most of the 3rd quarter, but with 29 seconds left in the 3rd, Everett broke free for a 75-yard TD run to boost their led to 21-8.  A 22-yd field goal with 6:44 left in the game put Everett ahead 24-8.

Oak Harbor scored again with 2:21 left in the game, a 3-yard run up the middle by Michael Fisken.  The 2-pt PAT run succeeded, cutting the Everett lead to 24-16.

The defense held Everett on the next possession, taking over on the OH 42 with 1:22 left to play.  Unfortunately, the Wildcats were stopped and Everett left with a 24-16 win.

The freshmen are on the road next week, traveling to Arlington, then play at home on Wednesday the 14th against Getchell.
