GBB 2014-12-10 at Mt. Vernon

Wednesday the girls basketball teams traveled to Mt. Vernon, the JV and varsity teams looking for their first wins of the season.

In the MVHS Field House, the freshman team just could not get going, scoring only 15 to the host's 43.  Trinity Olvera led the team with 5 points, Nina Foxx had 4, and Alyssa McCauley, Rosie Loera and Tia Miesle each scored 2.

The JV girls sprinted to a 10-2 first quarter lead and increased it to 17-8 at halftime.  The Wildcat shooting went cold in the 3rd while Mt. Vernon came alive and more than doubled their point total, even grabbing a 21-20 lead.  In the final frame, the girls just could got get the ball through the hoop and fel 28-24.  Montana Koslowski led the scoring with 7, Taylor DeConzo got 5, Lydia Peplinski and Matti Miesle 4 each.  Janae Payne (JP) and Lexi Jones each finished with 2 points.

Oak Harbor played even with Mt. Vernon for most of the varsity game.  Trailing by only 1 point, 9-8, at the end of the first, the girls played solid ball and at halftime trailed 21-19.  Defense was the story of the 3rd period, with the Wildcats holding their opponent to 7 points and the 'Cats being held to just 5.  While trailing 28-24 going into the final quarter, the game was still within reach.  With time running down and the Wildcats trailing, they had to foul to stop the clock, sending Mt. Vernon to the line for free throws. The final was 43-34 in favor of Mt. Vernon.
