Girls Tennis 03-17 vs Monroe - JV & Varsity

The Varsity girls tennis squad got off to a great start Tuesday afternoon at OHHS against the Monroe Bearcats, winning 6-1.

Jen Jansen, the #1 singles player had a tough match against Monroe's Robertson, but pulled out a 6-0, 5-7, 6-2 win. Laurin Rico, though losing 6-3, 6-2, played each point tough. Erin Neilon worked hard to win her first set, 7-5, but overpowered her opponent in the 2nd 6-1. Molly Deleon, the #4 singles, won 6-2, 6-3.

In doubles action the team of Clarissa Abadesco and Valerie Loders smoked Monroe in the first set 6-0 and won the second 6-4. Cady O'Dell and Janelle Green won their first 6-2, then struggled a bit in the second before snatching the 8-6 win to win the match. The #3 doubles team of Katie Wiggins and Jordan Faralan won 6-2, 6-3.

The #4 and #5 doubles team were able to get on the court against Monroe, but didn't fare well, falling 2-8 and 1-8, but the girls all gained valuable game-day experience.

The girls play next at Lake Stevens on Thursday and are next at home the following Thursday, March 26th against Stanwood.

The JV team also saw success, winning 6-1. JV #1 singles player Michelle Maxwell had the toughest match. She won the first set 6-2, then sprained her thumb in the 2nd set in addition to some painful foot blisters and lost the 2nd 3-6. The 3rd was a long, hard set that Maxwell pulled of winning 14-12 to win the match 2-1. In other single action, Christian Lade won 7-5, 6-4, Shannon Neilon 6-4, 2-6, 7-5, and Alexa holmly 6-0, 6-0.

JV #1 doubles (Kim Kerley and Ashley Leslie) won their match 7-5, 6-0. The #2 doubles team of McKenzie McCormack and Jennifer Bowers had a close match, winning the first set 7-5 but losing the 2nd 5-7. In the deciding 3rd set, the girls faltered, falling 3-10. Jennifer Fremd and Nicole Wright were the #3 doubles team and won their match 6-3, 8-6.

There were a total of 11 exhibition matches, with many JV girls getting to play twice.

Pruyne and Villanueva won 6-1
Travenetti and Marsh won 6-2
Abides and Van Dam won 7-5
