Girls Tennis preview

The OHHS girls tennis team kicks off the season Tuesday, March 17th at OHHS vs Monroe. The team will be lead, for the 10th year, by coach Horace Mells, Jr., assisted by JV coach Garry Brown.

This year’s team features several seniors, including #1 singles Jennifer Jansen, who will be attending Northwestern in Iowa on Volleyball and Tennis scholarships. In the #2 spot is junior Laurin Rico. Her brother, Tyler, will be a volunteer assistant this year.

Other key players this year are senior Mia Flores, in her 2nd year playing tennis; Bernie Rietz and Valeris Loders, both seniors playing their first year of tennis; and Katie Wiggins.

Coach Mells has not set any specific team goals yet, except that he expects the girls will finish the season playing better than they did at the beginning.

On a personal note, you won’t find Coach Mells in front of a TV very often, but does enjoy running and camping, and when he’s in the mood for Mexican food, he heads for Estebans.
