Middle School Girls Basketball - OH @ NW 3-18-09

The two Oak Harbor middle schools finished off their season playing each other at NWMS, their second meeting of the year on March 18th.

In their first meeting, the 7th grade girls played close throughout the game, with OHMS pulling off a 2-point win. Wednesday’s game started out with NWMS getting an early lead, building it to 13-6 during the 1st half thanks to post play by Kiesha Loftin. Not only was she strong in the paint, but let everyone in the gym know she could shoot from outside as well, knocking down a pair of 3-pointers. OHMS didn’t stay down for long, with good outside play by Annie Leete and inside play by Makenzi Schulle. In one play, Schulle scored 4 points in the space of about 10 seconds. She had just scored on a layup, then during the inbound pass, Makenzi stole the ball and put it in for another 2 points. Behind that great 2nd-period play, OHMS was able to tie the game at halftime, 20-20, and in the 2nd half pushed even harder, earning a 44-33 win.

Leete finished with 27 for the Panthers with Schulle adding 11. Jamie Estrella scored 4 and Kyla Bernardo 2.

On the Cougar side, Loftin tallied 23 points, followed by Chelsea Atkinson with 8. Cassidy Gurich hit for 2 to complete the NWMS scoring.

Before the 8th grade game, there was little doubt about which team was going to win. This year, NWMS happened to have the most experienced players, and totally dominated in the first meeting.

On Wednesday, OHMS scored first, with 6:09 left in the first, but only scored another 6 points the rest of the half while NWMS scored 22. The Cougars eased off in the 2nd half, but still won the game 38-23.

For the Cougars, Marissa Lewis led the scoring effort with 12, Emilie Renninger scored 9, Naomi Walker 8, Paula Gass 6, and Jalani Bobo 3.

The Panthers were led by Jeane Robles with 9. Kelsey Rankin and Karis Clark scored 6 each, and Joem Evangelista had 2 point.
