Track - 3-19 - South Whidbey Jamboree

The OHHS track team, numbering nearly 130 athletes, kicked off its season at the South Whidbey Jamboree Thursday afternoon at South Whidbey HS, competing against SWHS, Coupeville and Lakewood.

Starting with the girls, there were many first-place finisher and outstanding performances.

In the 100 meter dash, junior Shantae Young, a transfer in from Florida won the race in 13.54 second, almost a half-second faster than the 2nd place finisher. Close behind here were two Oak Harbor freshmen – Christina Alexander was 3rd overall with a time of 14.19 and Maura McKole was 4th with a 14.31 time.

Freshman Hannah Bressler was the only OHHS competitor in the 400 meter dash, finishing 2nd in 1:08.42.

The 800 meter run was all Oak Harbor, with OH girls picking up the top 5 spots. Things were not so lopsided in the 1600, with OH girls finishing in 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 6th.

Allison Duvenez, in addition to winning the 800m race, also won the 100m hurdles in 17.8 second.

Amanda Alvarado, a sophomore finished 2nd in the shot put with freshman Dominique Jackson “DJ” in 4th.

In Javelin, Janelle Yoshimoto “Yoshi” was the winner with a toss of 78 feet 1 inch.

Finally in the Long Jump, OH girls finished 1-2-3, with Shantae Young in first with a jump of 16-1, Janessa Ramos in 2nd with a jump of 14-6 and Hope Thompson in 3rd at 13-9.5

On the boys side, senior Stephen Lewis finished the 100 meter dash in first in 11.51.

Greg Goebel and Rashaad Smith were only .34 seconds apart in the 200, with Greg in 2nd and Rashaad in 4th.

Matt Bolte won the 400 meters in 55.36.

The 800 meter run had 9 OH runners, with Josh Duhrkopf the first Wildcat across the finish line in 2:08.28. Josh was also the first Wildcat in the 1600 and in 3rd overall with a time of 4:46.30

Brooks Waller and Kevin Richards were the only OH runners in the 100m hurdles, finishing in 4th and 5th overall.

Jake Lundstrom was the top Wildcat in the shot put, throwing the shot just a quarter-inch further than teammate Austin Church (34-1.25 to 34-1.0)

In the discus, Stephen Lewis finished in 2nd place overall with a throw of 117-07, just 3 inches short of the winning distance.

Two OH throwers exceeded 100 foot throws in the javelin – Sean Welch at 120-00 and Steven Story at 110-00, 4th and 6th overall.

Sophomore Mick Kincy was 3rd overall in the long jump with Derrick Clarit in 7th.

As with the 200 meter dash, Greg Goebel and Rashaad Smith were the only OH entrants in the triple jump, with their places reversed. Rashaad won the event with a jump of 40-1.75 and Greg was 2nd with a distance of 39-01.00.

Next up for the tracksters is a JV meet next Monday at Lake Stevens, then a varsity meet at home on Wednesday, March 25th against Snohomish and Stanwood. It’s the only OHHS sports event that day, and it’s free, so come cheer your favorite athlete.
