Girls tennis vs Arlington and Lake Stevens

There were a lot of changes to the last few tennis matches, with some being rained out and other cut short by rain.

The March 24th varsity match at Arlington was halted partway through due to rain, and won’t be complete until Arlington comes to Oak Harbor on April 24th.

The JV match at OHHS did go on, at it was all Arlington. Out of 14 matches played, OH was able to win only 3. In exhibition play, the team of Cassie Gianino and Cristin Lade won 8-0, Jennifer Fremd and Nicole Wright won 8-1, and Audrey Andoy and Asia Pruyne won 8-0.

Coach Brown said that “special mention goes to 2nd and 3rd singles who took their matches to a tiebreak before falling”. Audrey Andoy dropped the first set 0-6, but fought back to win the 2nd 7-5 before losing the 3rd set. Kate Kapitonova, an exchange student from Russia, struggled in the 1st set before winning 7-6 in a tiebreaker, but the effort wore her out and she dropped the 2nd two sets.

Photos (73 of them) of the JV match vs Arlington are posted HERE, along with some team photos.

Both JV and varsity were in action Wednesday the 25th with the JV hosting the Lake Stevens Vikings and the varsity on the road.

While they didn’t win the match, there were several individual successes in JV action. #2 singles Audrey Andoy won 6-3, 6-1 and #4 singles Cassie Gianino hammered her opponent in a 6-0, 6-0 shutout. In exhibition play, the doubles team of Cassie Gianino and McKenzie McCormack won 8-7 after 4 tiebreakers, and Jennifer Fremd teamed up with Nicole Wright to win 8-1.

Coach Brown said that although Lake Stevens won a majority of the matches, each set was hotly contested and “the match was in doubt for most of the day”.

The varsity team lost a close 4-3 match against the Vikings. Winners were #3 singles Erin Neilon who won 6-4, 7-6(4), and Molly Deleon (6-2, 6-0). The #3 doubles team of Abi Cone and Beverly Gianino won their match 6-4, 6-2.
