GBB - Santa Slam tournament - Day 2, Jan 3rd

On day 2 of the Santa Slam tournament, in the Gold bracket, Wenatchee recovered from their travel fatigue and beat Skyview 51-48 for 3rd while Archbishop Murphy beat Anacortes 64-33 for 1st place. In the Purple bracket, Sultan built an early 10-point lead, Puyallup got close, then Sultan pulled away for a 52-44 win for 3rd place.

At 7pm, Oak Harbor faced 3A Yelm
from the Olympia area, and the game started out with a bang. Jen Jansen and Jessica Denmon were both hot, leading the Wildcats to a 26-7 1st period lead. Jansen also played well in the 2nd, but Yelm started to whittle away at the OH lead, closing the game to 37-28 by halftime. Scoring was fairly light for both teams in the 3rd. Yelm scored with 7 seconds left in the 3rd to make the score 50-42, and hit two quick scored to open the 4th and cut the OH lead to just 4 points, then Denmon hit 3 in a row to bring the Wildcat lead back to double-digits, 57-46. With just two minutes left in the game, OH held a 64-54 lead, but Yelm didn’t give up, scoring 8 points in those last two minutes. OH was able to hold on, though, and won the championship 66-62. Denmon wound up with 29 points in the game (5-three pointers). Jansen and Cori Henricksen were also in double digits, with Jansen scoring 15 and Cori 11. Cheyenne Tubo scored 4, Kathryn Fisken 3 and Nikki Mowbray 2.

The JV team also played for the championship, against Archbishop Murphy, and it was a close fought game throughout. Murphy built a 13-6 1st period lead, but by halftime Oak Harbor cut it to just two points, 25-23. The girls tied the game at 25 with 6:36 left in the 3rd, but Murphy didn’t let it last long, scoring just 12 seconds later. With 4:19 remaining in the 3rd the girls were down by only 1 point 32-31, then with 2:35 left Tatiana Cumming hit a jumper to give Oak Harbor a 33-32 lead. Murphy fought back, re-taking the lead with 5 minutes left in the game 44-43, but Molly DeLeon scored a quick 5 points then Tiffany Earnhart added 2 more with 3 minutes left to make it 51-44 and the ‘Cats went on to win 53-46.

In the freshman game, the Oak Harbor Wildcats also faced off against the AB Murphy Wildcats. Murphy raced out to a 20-6 1st period lead and held the lead through the entire game. Oak Harbor played hard, but in this game was dominated by Murphy. When all was said and done it was Murphy 53, Oak Harbor 26. Dominique Jackson led the scoring with 9. Lia Pantoleon had 5, Emily Hunt and Liz Hedderman 4 each, while Rayan Russell and Erika Flores 2 each.
