Girls Basketball vs Monroe - 1/10/2009

The freshman game was strange. At the end of the 1st period, the Wildcats led 5-0, but in the 2nd scored only 2 points while allowing the Bearcats to hit for 17, putting the girls in a deep hole at the half, 17-7. Monroe continued to increase their lead in the 2nd half, running away with the game, 39-20. Leading the Wildcats was Kaitlynn Rossman with 6. Kaileen Burleson, Rayan Russell and DJ had 3 each, Lia Pantoleon and Emily Hunt 2 each, and Erika Flores hit one free throw. Again, as a team, the girls did not do well from the line but improved from last week, going 6-for-15 against Monroe.

In what seems to becoming a pattern, the JV game started out slow, with only Tatiana Cumming and Molly DeLeon scoring once each in the 1st period which ended with a Monroe lead 6-4. Monroe increased their lead to 20-14 by half. Mariah Ferguson scored the only Wildcat points in the 3rd as Monroe continued to build their lead, and the game looked lost. However, the JV girls rallied, and behind 10 4th quarter points by Adrianna Royal (6 from the free throw line) and 6 more by Molly, the Wildcats cut the lead to just 47-41. But with just 33 seconds left, there was just too much of a gap, and Monroe went on to win 49-42. DeLeon and Royal shared high scoring honors with 10 each, Yoshi had 7, Tatiana 6, Jessica James 1, and Shantae Young and Ferguson 4 each. The girls didn’t do badly from the line, going 14-21 as team, helped by Adrianna’s 6-8 and Molly’s 3-3.

The varsity team was all over Monroe from the start, and didn’t let up. The Wildcats led 18-6 at the end of the 1st period, and the lead would not get much smaller. Twice Monroe closed the gap to 9 points, but Oak Harbor kept the pressure on and went into the half leading 36-24. Oak Harbor increased the pressure in the 3rd, with Nikki Mowbray scoring with 1 second left in the 3rd to make the Wildcat lead 18. Oak Harbor let up a little on offense, scoring only 11 points, but held Monroe to 10 and went on to win 64-45.

Mowbray was hot on Saturday, scoring a game-high 27 points, followed by Jessica Denmon with 17. Jen Jansen scored 8, Cori Henricksen 5, Kathryn Fisken 4 and Cheyenne Tubo 3.

The girls play at Snohomish on Monday, Jan 12th and will be at home vs Marysville on Wednesday the 14th.
