Girls Basketball - Everett, 1-28-2009

After losing their first meeting, the Oak Harbor girls basketball team was looking forward to the home game against Everett with revenge on their minds.

The freshman girls had a similar result, as the Everett freshmen team is very good, and won the game 41-19. While they are not having a very successful year score-wise, the girls have won some games, and most importantly, are building individual skills and having fun doing it. Coach Showalter says they are a great group of girls and he’s having fun coaching them.
Erika Flores had 5 to lead the Wildcats, Lia Pantoleon 4, Rayan Russell 3, Kristen Winston and Kaileen Burleson 2, and Heavenly Cooper, Regina Carter and DJ scored 1 each.

It was an odd first half in the JV game. Although the Wildcats dominated defensively, holding Everett to just 4 points through a combination of pressure and speed, they could score only 6 points of their own, and in the 2nd period, nobody scored until the 5:15 mark, and with just 3:27 to go until halftime, Oak Harbor led by only 1 point, 8-7. The ‘Cats opened the game a bit, leading 13-9 going into the last two minutes of the half, but then Molly DeLeon got hot, and the team scored 8 points in those last two minutes to lead at halftime 21-11. The girls woke up in the 2nd half, smoking the Seagulls 20-2 in the 3rd period and 12-6 in the 4th to win a runaway game 53-19. Aided by her 9 2nd-period points, Molly led the scoring with 18, followed by Yoshi with 10. Shantae scored 7, Mariah 6, Jessica James 4, Kate Rossman and Addy Royal 3 and Tatiana Cumming 2. Next week, freshman Gloria Lonsdale, who has been sidelined with a broken foot, will be back at practice and hopes to play before next week ends. Welcome back Gloria!

With the embarrassing loss to Everett just over a week ago still fresh on their minds, the Varsity girls were determined to make sure it didn’t happened again, and they succeeded. Jumping out to a 19-4 1st period lead, the Wildcats never looked back as they held Everett to single-digit scoring in every period but the 4th. Jessica Denmon again led the ‘Cats, with 18 points, Nikki Mowbray hit for 14 and Jen Jansen 12. Chey had 8, Clarissa 7, Cori 4 and Mariah 2.
