OHHS wrestling tournament at Eastmont HS, Jan 3rd.

The Varsity Wildcat wrestlers traveled to Wenatchee and the Eastmont Cat Classic tournament on Jan 3rd, finishing 7th overall with 78 team points.

Freshman Corey Trimbur was up first for OH at 103 pounds and had a bye in the 1st round. He then beat Carter Steinoff of Bellevue 7-2 before losing to eventual champion Alexio Garcia by pin. Moving to the consolation bracket, Corey lost to Eddie Cuevas of Ellensburg to finish in 4th place.

At 119 pounds, senior Royce Cardwell also had a bye in the 1st round. His first match was against Jorge Cardenas of Davis who he beat in a close 10-8 match. Royce was matched against Liston Idler of Ellensburg in the 3rd round and beat him as well, 8-2, putting Royce into the championship round. There he faced off against a very good Sedale Garcia of Kamiak and was pinned in the 1st minute, but won 2nd place.

Josh Barton, a junior, represented the ‘Cats at 130 pounds. In the first round he was up against eventual champ Quinn Gannon who scored a tech fall against Josh. In the consolation bracket, Josh pinned Peter Ovens of Bellevue in 3:58 before falling to Colton Hankins, the 6th-place finisher.

The 135 pound bracket featured freshman Brandon Stratton who won his 1st-round match against Robert Kautzman of White River, then pinned Preston Hendrick of Ephrata in 1:21. Brandon was pinned in the 3rd round to Derek VanWyhe of Glacier Peak, and in the consolation bracket beat JC Cole of Ellensburg 8-4 for a 3rd-place finish.

Senior Ben Page weighed in at 140 pounds, finding himself against runner-up Kido Espinoza of Davis in the 1st round. Espinoza won 8-4. Page had a bye in the consolation bracket, then fell to 5th-place finisher Kurt Nygard.

In his 1st match, John Tuttle, now at 145 pounds, pinned Tayor Rollins of West Valley in 1 minute, then won a 9-4 decision over Austin Wagner of Davis before losing to eventual champ Tait Tucker of Ellensburg 12-5. Tut then lost to Quinton Hendrick of Ephrata 7-2 for a 4th place finish.

Yet another freshman, Justin Everett, wrestled for OH in this varsity tournament, at 152 lbs. He won his first match, against Matt Shaw of Eastmont, 9-5 but got pinned in the 2nd round by Sam Cooke of Kamiak. Justin fell to Davis’ Gabe Ramirez in the consolation bracket 14-5.

Kyle Magana, a senior, was at 160 lbs and got pinned by 3rd-place finisher Mike Madden of White River in the 2nd period. In the consolation bracket, Kyle beat Nik Hernandez of East Valley 5-3 and Willie Harper of Lakes 13-6 before losing to Austin Bethel of White River by pin in the 2nd period.

Junior Zach Loescher drew a bye at 171 lbs in the 1st round, but lost to White River’s Gino Russell by pin. Zach then blew through the consolation bracket, pinning Wenatchee’s Ernie Garnica in 1:58, Davis’s Dylan Their in 4:18 and West Valley’s Austin Watson in 1:31 to capture 5th place.

At 215 pounds, OH entered senior Chris Neumiller, who pinned Eastmont’s Johnny Martinez in 1:34, then pinned White River’s Chase Myers in 3:13. In the 3rd round, he lost to champion Josh Cole by pin, then lost to Eastmont’s Francisco Sanchez by pin to finish in 4th.
