Girls basketball vs Marysville, 1-14-2009

The girls varsity basketball team won an important victory Wednesday vs Marysville on January 14th, and hope to carry that momentum through this Saturday’s game at Everett.

The freshman team, which has struggled lately, won their game 30-23. The game was close until the 4th period, when the girls were able to build and hold onto a late lead. Good defense and an insurance score secured the win. Kaitlynn Rossman scored 12 to lead the ‘Cats, and DJ had 9. Lia Pantoleon and Kristen Winston had 3 each, Erika Flores 2, and Heavenly Cooper 1.

The JV girls are also struggling, especially since the Christmas break, and they just could not get any offense going in their game. The first quarter ended in a tie, 8-8, but the Tomahawks broke away with a 13-point 2nd quarter, and held the JV squad to just 2 points in the 3rd on their way to a 48-20 win. Yoshi and Mariah scored half the points with 6 each. Molly added 4 and Tatiana and Shantae 2 each. The girls are looking to turn things around Saturday with better ball handling to reduce turnovers.

The Wildcats were in complete control of the varsity game from beginning to end. An aggressive defense prevented Marysville from scoring until halfway through the 1st period. M-P scored again at the 3:00 mark to double their score, and did not score again until 3 minutes into the 2nd period, and by that time the Wildcats were ahead 10-4. The girls increased their lead to 25-16 at the half and led by 10, 34-24 at the end of 3 periods. The Wildcats got a lot of scoring in the final quarter, including Jessica Denmon, who hit 5 of 6 free throws in the final 1:03 to ensure the win. Marysville big girl Britt Harris, who normally hits double digits in scoring, was held to just 4 points for the game. Denmon scored 13 for the game, with Jen and Nikki right behind with 11. Cori Henricksen scored 7, Tiffany Earnhart 5, and Cheyenne Tubo scored 2 with her patent flip shot from under the basket.

As a special treat, the halftime pizza shootout contestant was Jimmy Edens, who won by hitting the layin.
